Aloha, Rachael Watson here! I am incredibly pumped to be your child's first grade teacher and thank you in advance for the opportunity to synergize (with you) and build strong foundations to create a positive first impression of life-long learning. Together we will enable success for every child in our class, one by one, as an 'ohana.
My business is to teach intrinsic motivation, impress the feeling of internal joy that the act of loving others reaps, instill courage, create a norm for using manners and extending respect, and enhance the quality of life in little souls.
I was born and raised in Wailuku and proudly graduated from Wailuku Elementary, Iao Intermediate, and Baldwin High School. Upon high school graduation in 1998 I pursued my dream to leave Maui and attend a college on the mainland to further my education. It was important for me to broaden my horizons by exploring other cultures aside from my own and to learn the initial steps of independence. In May of 2002 I attained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Colorado. My emphasis was in Social science with a minor in psychology. Shortly after, I achieved a masters degree in School Counseling (K-12) and excitedly returned home in 2004.
My teaching career started almost immediately at Kihei Elementary School where I was fortunate to take on a reading support position. Learning the foundation of how to teach a child to read was miraculous! For the next eight years I taught second graders how to solve math word problems, write paragraphs, read fluently, and most importantly got them to understand that learning never stops! :)
Now I'm here at Pu'u Kukui Elementary School loving the life as a dedicated teacher. Teaching in the same community that has once educated me is simply gratifying! I taught kindergarten for the first time last year and planned to fall in love with it. Mission accomplished!! This year I have big dreams to have an incredible year in first grade as well. My dear families.....together, WE. CAN. DO. ANYTHING!
